ZDNet’s Password Pro 32

A handy little program I’ve been using since the mid 90’s, ZDNet’s Password Pro 32. I don’t know how many people have emailed me over the years asking for a copy because of posts I’ve made on various forums. The app is no longer available on the ZDNet web site and it’s very difficult to find someone with a copy of the 32 bit version. It was always FREE so I don’t think I’m breaking any laws by offering it here – for Free of course. ZDNET should either make this app available again or build a newer version. I’m putting it here for posterity’s sake… and because I’ve lost the executable more than once ; ) ZDNet’s Password Pro 32 (Zip file 5.35 meg). Enjoy. It really is the best password management program I’ve come across.

Overview

Complete password management – From password expiration warnings, to auto-generation of new passwords. Password Pro is an all inclusive tool for keeping tabs on passwords.

Password History – Keep your passwords for each system unique. Password Pro will warn you if you try to reuse a password that you have used recently for a system.

RC4 encryption algorithm with a key from RSA Data Security Incorporated – Password Pro uses the Microsoft Jet Database Engine for its encryption mechanism to keep your passwords safe from unauthorized access.

Drag and drop, and quick clipboard access – Keep your passwords out of view even when you need to use them. Use shortcut menus to copy your user name and password or drag and drop the information to any other program that is OLE drag and drop capable.

Built in shortcuts – Not only does Password Pro record the path to the web site you need to use your password at, but it will even launch your browser to that site for you. It will also run programs on your hard drive that require passwords.

Easy backup and restore functionality – Password Pro has a full set of database utilities including the ability to save your password database to a backup on floppy diskette and also into other formats. Password Pro can import information from other file formats too.

Simple, speedy item entry – Adding information to Password Pro has never been easier. Password Pro will fill in a default user name, auto-generated password, and expiration date when creating new items.

Explorer-style interface – Using a familiar interface, Password Pro is a breeze to learn and a pleasure to use.

Basic Operation

After an initial configuration, using Password Pro is a simple matter of entering password information and then using that information with other programs. Run Password Pro and login to your current database (same as the one used the last time you used Password Pro). You will then see the Password Entry List. Use the Password menu to edit or add or delete entries.

You can also “Launch” entries using the lightning bolt toolbar button. Launching an entry will run the program specified in the password entry’s shortcut field. When another program prompts you for a password, try dragging the corresponding password entry over the application where your password should go. Drop the entry, and pick whether the drop location requires a user name or a password. If the program does not support drag and drop then you can use the copy user name, and copy password buttons to keep information hidden while moving it to where it’s needed. These buttons copy the information to the clipboard so you can paste (Cntrl+V) them into the other application.

After you have completed this process, you can minimize Password Pro to an icon in the system tray. Click the system tray icon to re-open the password entry list.
